| General Information
|
Kompong Chhnang Province is located located in the center of Cambodia between 10o14'-12o38' longitudes and 104o10'-104o51' latitudes and is one of the five provinces around the Tonle Sap. The province borders Kampong Cham Province to the east, KampongSpeu and Kandal Provinces to the south, Pursat Province to the west and Kampong Thom Province to the north. The total area of the province is 552,100 ha, of which 136,000 ha is agricultural land.
The province comprises eight districts, 69 communes and 546 villages. The total population of the province is 487,993. Of the eight districts, six have fishing lots in the Tonle Sap area, these being Kampong Tralarch, Chol Kiri, Rolea Phhear, Kampong Leang, Boribo and Kampong Chhnang. The province is also home to a famous attraction called Kang Rey Mountain, which is visited by national and international tourists. Moreover, Kampong Chhnang is the province known to have the most plentiful fresh water fish in the Tonle Sap
The province is covered by 1/3 of forest and mountains equivalent to 35,000 ha. Unfortunately, the forest is severely damaged by civil unrest, encroachment for land tenure, uncontrolled logging, high population growth. The main industries of this province are fishing and rice growing, as well as pottery. With its green paddy fields, rivers and sugar palm-lined horizons, Kampong Chhnang is a wonderful place to spend a few lazy days and take in the sights of the traditional Cambodian way of life.

KAMPONG CHHNANG PROVINCE RESOURCES |
|
Kompong Chhnang has nothing essential to check out, but the riverfront area is interesting to explore. The town is surrounded by water for much of the year and there are a lot of floating communities adn fisher folk living on the river. Arranging some sort of boat trip might be a nice way to take it all in. Across the river are several old temples, dating from the Chenla period, including Prasat Srei, but these are only worth considering as the focus of a rural adventure, as they are very dilapidated. You can arrange a moto driver in town for the day. Given Kompong Chhnang's clay pots connection, it is hardly suprising to hear that the town is well-known for its undecorated but intricate pottery. There are several stalls selling pots, vases and more on the road to Phnom Penh. |

TRAVEL TIPS |
Currency Exchange
The Acleda Bank, located on NH5 towards Phnom Penh, is the only back in town. It represents Western Union for cash transfers, but can't change travelers checks. Telephone and fax services are available at the post office in the old French quarter, but phone calls are more straight forward to arrange from the private telephone booths around town. Odec Email is located on NH5 towards Phnom Penh.
