| General Information
|
Kampong Speu, west of Phnom Penh and almost on the capital's doorstep, is a province often overlooked, but an ideal place to get off the beaten track. Speu is the Khmer word for starfruit, but Kampong Speu is actually famous for its palm sugar, considered the best in the Kingdom. It also produces plenty of teuk
t'not chu, or palm wine.
Cambodia’s tallest mountain located in this landlocked province bordered by Kandal, Koh Kong, Pursat, Kampot, Takeo and Kampong Chhnang. That is Mount Aoral (Phnom Aoral) at 1813 meters above sea level. Kampong Speu consists of 8 districts, divided into 89 communes and 1,319 villages, and 5.2 per cent of Cambodia's population lives here. The town of Kampong Speu is less than an hour from Phnom Penh down National Route 4, the road which eventually takes you south to Sihanoukville.

GETTING IN - OUT
KAMPONG SPEU PROVINCE |
*Road: Ho Wa Genting buses travel direct to Oudong, leaving from Psar Thmei (Central Market) from 6.15am to 5.30pm every day for 3,000 riel one way. Despite recent work the road is poor. The trip takes at least an hour.
*Motorbike: The main road to Oudong is busy, chokingly dusty and not very good. There are several good late rite back roads, quiet and scenic, that meander through the countryside to the ancient capital.
From Phnom Penh, take the road through Psar Prek Pneur to find the back roads, or ride through Oudong and join the road behind the temples to return this way. Motodops around several guesthouses can also be persuaded to ride to Oudong and back for the day. Negotiate fees with the driver first.
