| General Information
|
Svay (pronounced Swai) Rieng and Prey Veng is a province located in south east Cambodia and is bordering Prey Veaeng province to the north, Vietnam to the east and south and Kandaal province to the west. The road running through this province is one of the country’s busiest highways since it links with the National Highway 1 from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to Phnom Penh. Since the rehabilitation of national road one, it is more convenience to commute to this province by car on national road number one (must cross ferry at Neak Loeang). The journey might take approximately 2 hours and a half. Geographically, Svay Rieng is a low land province. Majority of land is arable land and it is under Mekong water half a year. According to Ministry of Interior statistics, Svay Rieng province covers 2,869.35 km2. Administratively, this province is divided into 07 districts, 80 communes and 690 villages. According to 1995 population census, there were 478,612 person accounted for 98,580 households settled in Svay Rieng province. Svay Rieng is also considered one of the
Cambodia's poorest provinces because of the poor quality of its land. Most of the population eke out a subsistence living based on farming and fishing. There is really nothing to attract visitors, but the provincial capital, Svay Rieng, is a typical Cambodian town with some charm.
The province of Svay Rieng during the Vietnam War, became an obsession with the American forcers because they believed that this was where the Vietnamese
communists version of the Pentagon was situated. While there were undoubtedly a lot of Vietnamese communists hiding out in Cambodia during much of the war, there was no such thing asa a Pentagon. In 1969 the Americans began unauthorized bombing in this area and in 1970 joined forces with South Vietnamese forces and launched a ground assault.

GETTING IN - OUT
SVAY RIENG PROVINCE |
*Taxi: The taxis for Svay Rieng leave from Phnom Penh's Chbah Ampeau taxi park in the southeast of the city. The cost is about 7000r per person if you can find one going all the way, but many taxis only go as far as Neak Luong to avoid paying the US$1 charge for the ferry across the Mekong River. It is easier and more comfortable to take an air-con bus from Phnom Penh's Psar Thmei to Neak Luong for 4000r, cross the river by ferry as a foot passenger and arrange a share taxi on to Svay Rieng from the other side for about 4000r a person.
* The route Svay Rieng to Bavet: This trip may be more difficult because taxi drivers simply won't believe you want to go there and generally prefer to wait for the more lucrative option of taking foreigners all the way to Phnom Penh. The best plan may be to stuff yourself into a taxi with some other tourists and ask to be dropped off at Svay Rieng. Taxi usually drop people off near Psar Svay Rieng.
