The Banteay Top (Fortress of the Army) may only be a small temple, but there is something special about the atmosphere here. The temple was constructed around the time of Banteay Chhmar, quite possible as a tribute to the army of Jayavarman VII, who had reaffirmed Cambodian dominance over the region in a comprehensive defeat of the Chams.
Set among the rice paddies, one of the damaged towers almost appears to have been partially rebuilt and looks decidedly precarious, a bony finger pointing skyward. This temple is about 14km southwest of Banteay Chhmar on a poor dirt road. The turn-off from NH69 is marked by a stone plinth with gold inscription, about 9km south of Banteay Chhmar.
