POIPET OVERVIEW |
| The border gate of Poipet is reinventing itself as the Las Vegas of Cambodia, home to six major casino resorts and counting. With gambling illegal in Thailand, Poipet has emerged as the most popular border destination for neighborly flutters, eclipsing Krong Koh Kong and Pailin. Names such as Star Vegas and Tropicana don't make it quite sophisticated as the US desert metropolis just yet, but it is growing fast.
As recently as 1996, the town was under intermittent mortar fire from the Khmer Rouge and so was always a transient place with a transient look. Town roadworks aren't proceeding as fast as resort building, so during the wet season the roads become rivers of mud and detritus. There is absolutely no reason to spend any time here unless you have a particular urge to part with large amount of money.

POIPET TRAVEL TIPS |
* Currency Exchange: There is a handy branch of Canadia Bank, on NH5 not far from the border post, for changing travelers checks. Changing cash is faster at shops or restaurants.
* Transort: The small town of Poipet is connected by road to Thailand to the west and Sisophon to the east. With some dedicated negotiating, pick-ups are available to Sisophon, direct to Siem Reap or direct to Battambang. The times of the trip can be much longer in wet season.
The road Poipet to Siem Reap has finally been improved, changing journey times dramatically. Pick-ups travel from Sisophon to Poipet, to Siem Reap, and to Battambang. There are also small trains to Battambang leaving some time after 1pm each day. There are no trains to Poipet as the Khmer Rouge ripped up the tracks long ago.
