OSMACH BORDER GATE OVERVIEW
The check point of O Smach shot to fame in July 1997 as remnants of the Funcinpec forces regrouped here after the coup. Perched on the mountain, soldiers under the command of General Neak Bun Chhay were able to hold out against the superior forces of the CPP until a peace agreement was brokered allowing the 1998 elections to go ahead. With the advent of peace, the military moved in and cleared locals off safe land to sell it to a casino developer. The casino attracts thousands of Thais each to gamble in this remote outpost of Cambodia. Meanwhile, the locals who were evicted were forced to relocate to mined land that the military claimed to have cleared. All too often in Cambodia, the strong exploit the weak, but this episode was particularly heatless and brought to international attention the issue of military land grabs in peacetime Cambodia. Only hardcore gamblers will consider a visit now, but in the coming years this will be upgraded to a full international border once the surfaced road to Siem Reap is built.
